Rusty Fox Farm Grilling and Smoking Rub

A couple weeks ago we were planning to do some work outside over the weekend so Dad decided to cook a pork butt on the smoker. His smoked meats are delicious and we all love it when he decides to cook something. The following recipe is what he uses to season pork and beef before smoking it.

The pictures show a quadrupled recipe because the jar we keep it in was empty. You just mix your paprika, garlic powder, brown sugar, onion powder, chili powder, salt, pepper, cumin, and chipotle powder together. (If you can’t find chipotle powder you can use cayenne pepper.)

There’s no need to grind it. Super simple! When you mix it, it looks pretty light, but it will change color when you put it on the meat.

I’m not going to explain how to smoke a piece of meat. I am not an expert on it, and googling how to smoke the meat you are cooking is going to give you a better description than I could. We were working the day Dad cooked this, but I’ll eventually have him walk me through his process and I’ll share it. However, I’ll show some overview pictures of what we did:

The meat was so tender it was falling apart when he brought it in. The next day I made cole slaw which is my favorite side to pulled pork. I also like just a little bit of bbq sauce.

Do you use any special rubs or seasonings when you grill or smoke? We’d love to hear about them!
